Rain dance

So much rain! Our seasonal creek’s been running over the driveway since New Year’s Eve; enough to wash my sandbags downstream. More rain today. It’s time for a sun dance:

Can Spring Ever Be False?

Any sunny day now feels like spring,

like the first Alaskan winter day above freezing,

we might be dancing in shirt-sleeves

till the early sun went down.

Here in Sierra foothills I’m walking spring green

squishy underfoot from so much rain.

No flowers yet, unless you count the mushrooms

overnight blossoming out of rot,

doing their own fairy-circle dance for love

of rain. We need the rain.

Right now it’s springing out of earth,

small gushers in the swale

where two tall young oaks in saturated soil

uprooted, one bringing down the other

like star-crossed lovers.

Their canopies entwined above a fresh green

bower, I creep inside. Imagine this

as shelter in a storm.
