Starting with New Years Day. Then came the storm (10-11 inches in 2 nights and a day).
I Didn't Know
Handyman said he’d come soon as he could – tree fallen on a house, roads washed out.; trouble everywhere. Overnight, our little creek a lake over driveway & field, flooding county road. We were stuck, hilltop house an island. TV news: disaster from valley to foothills. Power out for thousands, traffic underwater on highway; helicopter rescues. I surveyed our damage. Rain stopped – for now. Ranch gate fallen blocking driveway eroding away. Fence smashed.
floodwater leaping

to rejoin the flow
Sun. Lake lower. Free the gate – attached to 12x12 waterlogged post laid flat in mud? Impossible. A voice. Neighbor with another lady – neither dressed for outdoors – but bound to help. How did we budge that massive post/hinged gate, steady it on round of unsplit firewood from up-creek? New Russian neighbor happened by, stopped to help. Gate free, out of the way! Driveway mud-deep. Another happened-to-be-handy volunteer.

friends I never knew
