Graveyard for an abandoned townsite from Gold Rush days, midst of forest on a one-lane hump & hollow hardpan road – my car wasn’t up to it. But Saturday’s South County “cemetery crawl” was my ticket; thanks, Buried History/Save the Graves! And thanks, Melissa from Tahoe, for a lift in your snazzy little Jeep!
Indian Diggins Cemetery
In a different light
I might mistake the obelisks
for tree trunks cut off
before their prime.
Look closer. They stand
marble-solid
foursquare narrowing
as they rise pointing
toward heavens
as does the forest –
pine and incense
cedar striving
for sky
but rooted here
nourished
by the ever-flowing
cycles
death, birth, life.
