We celebrated Washington’s Birthday that long ago in Ajo, AZ, getting married by the Justice of the Peace, then high-tailing into Sonoran Desert among cinder cones, organ pipe cactus, birds I’d never seen before…. (photo: Horse Meadow 1971)
Love Couplets
I remember all our adventures as far as my memory carries,
and your voice on the phone pure helium lifting thru invisible ceilings,
and your hugs, comforting as deep- rooted mountain juniper
and how you brushed over secrets I told no one but you
who taught me the language wisdom of dog eyes and silent soil
how we trekked by compass in the dark, trusting
to find who we were looking for, to save, the way you found me.
